BEAULIEU

Stone base and wooden calvary outside in front of the Abbey Church of The Blessed Virgin and Holy Child.
(It is missing two statues which are inside the church on a windowsil.)
It has since been restored and is now as the right hand photo (2009).

Sub Lieutenant Royal Navy

Born 4 April 1897 he served in H.M. Ships Cornwall, Warspite
and Gabriel and H.M. Submarines during the Great War
He gave his life for his Kin and Country January 1918 +

Rifles, who fell in action in Mesopotamia, June 3rd
1919, aged 31. Nephew of the above, and son of
Colonel H.P. King-Salter, Rifle Brigade.

Bronze tablet on wall in the Abbey Church of The Blessed Virgin and Holy Child.

This tablet was erected by John
2nd Lord Montague of Beaulieu in thankfulness
for his miraculous escape from drowning
after the sinking of the P.and O. SS Persia
torpedoed by a german submarine near Crete
and in memory of Eleanor Velasco Thornton
who served him devotedly for fifteen years
drowned December 30th 1915
